Born to missionary parents in Japan, Robby had an early start in ministry. In his father’s church he began a children’s ministry at the age of 12, and became the youth minister at 16 years old. Robby says, “I knew from a young age that God had called me into ministry. My parents say that from the age of 2, I told people that I would grow up and be a missionary.” In many ways that has been the case in Robby’s life.
Robby and his wife, Angie, married in 1992, have pastored the Vineyard Church of Aurora, IL since 1996. They feel God called them to plant in a poor urban community, and continually use “power evangelism” to gather for the church. They estimate that over 50% of current attenders have come to Christ at the Vineyard Aurora, and that almost ¾ of those have come through “power” encounters.
“In addition to starting and pastoring this church, God has called me for the purpose of building up and equipping the local church with power tools for harvesting,” Robby shares. These “power tools” are prophetic ministry, healing, ministry of the presence of God, and deliverance from demonic power. Robby loves to tell literally hundreds of stories of his personal experiences, which include God using him and others he has mentored through the years to see God’s Kingdom “break in” with signs and wonders.
Having been in over 30 countries around the world, God has used him to help build the church internationally as well. He has ministered in many Muslim countries and in 2 of the top 10 most dangerous countries according to Voice of the Martyrs magazine

Time to Reminisce

If ever there were an appropriate time, this is it! I have to say that I have had a lot of fun in the Tapestry over the years and I have done a lot of outreach events over the years, but Sunday took the cake! I just feel that I have to say something about it or I might burst today. I still may burst afterwards. Lord, please have mercy on my co-workers… HAHAHA!

KENYA…

After being in Kenya and seeing what I have seen, I have sensed more than ever my local call to DC. This call has driven me to desire more for our DC metro area and after seeing what GOD wanted to do through us overseas, I found myself thinking, we have to do more at home!

It's funny, the very thing that has driven me to trust, open up and desire more for our church is the fact that we saw GOD move in that foreign environment. Some people thought in the church that I would more and more fall in love with the work in Kenya and at some time in the near future simply leave the Tapestry in DC, hit the road and do foreign missions with the rest of my life. I have actually discussed this with some of you over the last weeks. And granted, we have seen amazing miracles such as blind eyes seeing, mute speaking, various other amazing healings like paralytics being healed, not to mention, the churches planted, the baptisms, the pastors now in training, the opportunities in medicince, education, hunger, refugee help, the sheer thousands that have been saved in the last year and the amazing multitudes that come to our meetings. But, this is NOT MY PRIMARY CALLING. The Tapestry here in the DC metro area IS that calling.

If I were simply convinced that this Kenya our call for the rest of our existence, I would jump in whole heartedly and do it with the rest of my life. However, this is only a piece and a part of a larger call. The call is much bigger than simply one mission field.

I can feel THIS LARGER CALL rising among us today. I can almost hear the angelic chorus breaking through the natural membrane that separates two overlapping worlds right now. I can feel their excitement as they eagerly await the revelation of sons and daughters. I can sense their anticipation that fathers and children might actually reconnect. I can almost feel my skin crawl with the energy the saints that have gone before us long and intercede for the Bride to be arraid in her suitor's glory.

Can you feel, hear, sense or almost tangibly see it?

THE CALL…

The call I heard while in Kenya was simple, "GO HOME AND DO THE SAME…"

You see, Kenya has become something more for me now. It is part of my destiny, yet at the same time a training ground, a spring board and even an ancient landmark for us to reminisce on. When I think of all that Poppa has done and all that HE is doing there, I keep thinking to myself, "I wonder what this would look like back home?" "I wonder how we translate this to DC?" "I wonder how we even learn from these wonderful, precious people in their reckless abandon and open transparency and how that is supposed to direct us inside of our culture, in our communities, in our western world?" You guys showed me what that looked like yesterday!

THE BLOCK PARTY…

I could see every one of you truly demonstrating what it would and should look like when the children of GOD live their faith inside their culture. I could actually SEE, HEAR, FEEL, AND TOUCH HEAVEN! I could see what this dynamic missional faith community would look like here in our own back yard.

I actually believe Sunday we saw heaven a little bit…

I could almost hear heaven when I was with you out there.

I could almost feel angel wings brush by.

I could almost see the throngs of those that have gone before.

I could almost hear Jesus whisper to Poppa, "Poppa, it's amazing… They're doing it…"

What was it we were doing? Was it the carnival? Was it the activity?

Yes, it was. That and much more. With every stroke of paint that Magdalena, Julie, Laura, Joohee and others made on the MOST AMAZING painted faces I could see. With every game that was played watching the kids with Aaron, Thao, Patrick, David, Yireh, and so many others. Seeing the heart that went into the making of the signs by Devin, Anetra, Yireh, Liz, the passion that went into the games, the effort that went into EVERY DOOR KNOCKED ON by Patrick, Zuzana, Seiji, Will and Joan. Seeing the sweat and care from Daeho, Grace, Su and others. Remembering the emails, the signs, the postings, the prayer, the smiles, the laughter. Hearing Jose speak in his native tongue to a people that have been too long forgotten by the larger American church. Hearing the laughter, seeing the joy, watching the absolute effort by EVERY PERSON. Yong, Seung, Hoang, and Joan's parents. Jason, Ross, Tony, Jyak, Jeanne, Peter, Sue, Kevin, Jen, and I don't want to miss Stuart who saved my life with animal balloon pumping until the wee hours of the event.

And believe me, I HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN SO MANY OF YOU that I have not named like Big Yong, Christin, Seung, Hoang, Birchie! I know you were there. I saw you working. I saw your affect. I felt the building of the Kingdom. I sensed the doors open of heaven opening for the ones that usually have those very same doors slammed in their faces.

With every action I saw the activity of the Kingdom… In every smile, I could see Poppa warming hearts…

THE MUCH MORE…

The much more was actually so much easier to achieve than we thought wasn't it. What was the much more? Was it the quality of the games? Was it the hundreds of the attendees? Was it the quantity of the activities or food?

No Way!

It was the quality of the interactions. It was the depth of the relationship. Today I sit here at my desk having the hardest time starting my day because of the QUALITY of the interactions. It's my neighbors that said they want to hang out. It's Alex who helped us set up and said that he wants to hang out with me sometime. It's the relationships that I long to see again as soon as tomorrow. I mean, we could wait a whole year to do this again. However, you tell me… Do you really want to wait that long until you see what you saw yesterday? Do you really want to go a whole year until you hear the kids laughter? Do you really want to wait a year to see those faces?

Not me.

I want to dig in. It may not always look the same as we go, but I don't care. I just want to keep spending time with my new found wonderful outside family I have found in our larger community.

I need it. I need you. I need them. Today, I feel like I have done what I was made for. Don't you? Isn't it great to feel like you are right smack dab in the middle of what your Heavenly Poppa made you for?

Much more… There was much more at that park yesterday than events. There was Poppa. You gave HIM access to your world. This is my favorite thing in the world. This is what Poppa is calling me to and the translation of what I am learning in Kenya.

And you made it happen. It was all of you. Thanks Su, for planning this. Thanks Patrick and Zuzana for driving it. Thanks Lori for helping organize it. Thanks leaders for leading it. Thanks church for working it. Thanks Tapestry for being the church I've always ever wanted. You make me so happy.

You are making me who I have always been called to be. You are becoming who you've always been called to be.

And I believe that you are on the way to seeing MUCH MORE!

Check out this quote. This really spoke to me today. I have been working to redo my private life and reorganize, make my life plans based on my personal mission, design my solitude times and finalize changes to my work schedule and prayer and meditation time. At least once a year I reevaluate everything and kind of pause in life before making huge life decisions.

With the church in a growth position and there being more need in our community than ever before, I see that this is one of those times to really pray, get quiet before Poppa and redo my life-plan.

Think back to the quote. Doesn't it inspire a certain outdoorsy, step out and be available to the voice of GOD feeling? I mean, I am encouraged today with the rest of the summer time that I have to get there. I plan some time for this this weekend. I encourage everyone to do the same. It all goes back to what I said Sunday…

"When things push for me to get busiest, I slow down to hear more." Let's definitely make space to hear the voice of Jesus…

We're BBBBBBBBBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACCCCCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Guys, it was an amazing journey and we are all the better for it. I missed you all and glad to be back from the far reaches of Kenya to my home church in the DC metro area. I hope you are all well. I have prayed for many of you often and want to remind you to send your requests as often as you would like so we can keep praying for you.

We have seen Poppa do some pretty amazing things overseas, but nothing more amazing has happened in my heart than my love for all of you. I am thankful for your prayers and support and want you to know how happy I am to walk with each and everyone of you in whatever capacity you are allowing me.

You make me a Pastor! I could not be who I am called to be without you. Isn't it neat that Poppa makes it work that way? Isn't it neat that we make each other who we are called to be? We each need each other. I love it!!!! And I realize it the most when I am away. So many of you did so much for my family and me while I was gone. Thank you! I don't know what I would do without you all.

We have many stories and Yong will share them in two weeks on Sunday at the AM service. You will NOT want to miss that. The miracles and opportunities that Poppa has given us are beyond belief. I hope you will be able to be there.

I will be starting the YOUTH SERVICE either this week or the next. No matter when it is, be sure of this, we will be ROCKIN'!!!! I have missed being a part of youth ministry. And though I know I have aged a bit from the time I started in it, believe you me, I still have some tricks up my sleeves friends!!!!! So, if you are youth age out there, you are gonna want to tell your friends and get ready. The Tapestry is coming live for the junior high, high school and young college aged crowd!!!!!

With that said, folks. Get ready for FUN! Get ready for ADVENTURE! Get ready for TAPESTRY! read on below for a message by Henry Blackaby that really speaks to me. I mean, just coming back from Kenya living this concept is life changing.

The Fragrance of His Knowledge

Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place. For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing. (2 Corinthians 2:14-15)
Whenever the Romans won a major military victory they would celebrate with a spectacular parade. The commanding general would lead the procession in a magnificent chariot, followed by his soldiers, musicians, and other officials. Then, soldiers would lead the defeated enemies through the city in . As a part of the celebration, the Romans would burn fragrances on altars, filling the entire city with a pleasant aroma. Even those who could not witness the triumphal procession could hear the victory music and smell the pleasing incense. Everyone would know that their army had been victorious. The special fragrance came to symbolize victory to anyone who smelled it.
Paul used this vivid imagery to describe the effect that Christians should have in the world. According to Paul, God permeates our lives with the fragrance of the knowledge of Christ. Everywhere we go, our lives should demonstrate to others that Christ is victorious. As unbelievers observe our lives, they should become aware of the victorious power of Christ. As other Christians witness the victory Christ gives us over our sin, they can rejoice in the triumph of their Lord and gain confidence that Christ will bring victory in their lives as well.
The most compelling evidence that Christ is alive and triumphant is His activity in the lives of His people. It is a privilege to be the fragrance of Christ by which others learn of God’s life-changing power over sin. Your life ought to be convincing proof that God continues to work powerfully in the lives of His people.

Hey Guys,

Please forgive me if this is too soon to send another thread after sending one on Friday, but I wanted to take a moment to just touch base before Yong and I headed to Kenya. Of course, this is my second trip there this year. And if you ahven't been a part of the discussion, let me fill you in really quickly. There is a lot that has happened. The last trip was in April and we had the following outcome:

1 - Revival Stirred
2 - 10 churches planted and pastors
3 - hungry fed and many helped through support
4 - Humanitarian work established for Medical, Educational, Hunger, & Micro-finance
5 - Networking of many churches
6 - Healings - Including blind see, paralytic and possible HIV healing.
7 - Many salvations, deliverances and even witches being converted.

Since then we have seen:

1 - Continued healings even as recent as this past week.
2 - Growing revival as there are now possibly more than 20 churches and have spanned the region as well as growing over the borders.
3 - It hit the airwaves with much media attention on their radio stations.
4 - Opportunities to grow in relationship with Chief of the Kisii. Chief Vincent.
5 - More leaders added
6 - A growing movement among pastors and churches

We now have the possibility of:

1 - Developing 100 leaders for the Chief's of Kenya.
2 - Working with more leaders of the country
3 - Working with Jamii Bora Trust
4 - Connecting with more medical workers, farmers, and others
5 - Ministering to over 4,000 hungry, displaced & refugee
6 - Spreading the work into the edges of Rwanda, Uganda and other countries

This is truly UNDERstating the reality of just what is going on, however, I KNOW you will understand if I only write these things and ask you to pray.

Lastly, the church is going great and I am really proud of just what everyone is doing. PLEASE finish by reading this list of upcoming things and if you are in the area, come support. If you are not able to get involved or if you are outside the Tapestry reach now, please pray with us as we make some significant growth spurts.

1 - Youth Ministry (Sunday Youth Service) Starts on Sunday, August 16!!!!! 11AM, we will have the Tapestry's first ever youth service!!!! We have a group of youth now, a worship leader, some speakers and some REAL excitement stirring!!!!! GET READY FOR SOME FUN!

2 - This past Sunday, we had a water bottle outreach, cookout and amazing service. ON SUNDAY, August 30, 2009. WE NEED YOUR HELP! We need volunteers as this Block Party is going to be a cookout on Sterroids!!!! We have a ton of needs and we need you! Email sujuncheng@tapestrychurch.org for more info on those needs and keep your eyes open, because there will be more emails explaining those needs VERY SOON!

3 - We have an amazing outreach that has been going on every Saturday for years in Langley Park feeding the homeless called "FUEL" and day-worker. WE NEED YOUR HELP! If you are interested in being a part of this outreach, email seungshin@tapestrychurch.org .

4 - Lastly, we are planning on having a BAPTISM this summer! So, if you are interested in learning about this first step as a follower of Jesus or if you have never been Bapitsed and have recently begun a walk with Jesus, we want to invite you take a part. We do not know the exact location yet, but it will likely be a swimming pool in our area and is going to be TONS OF FUN! So, if you want to come to the class and be baptised, please email lorihedrick@tapestrychurch.org and she will add you to the list. I have already had a couple people express interest, so come join in! We hope to have baptism on Sunday, September 20, 2009 if not sooner!!!!!!

This is just a note to let you know why you are important to me. So many of you speak words of truth and encouragement that "saves my life" daily!
As we head back to Kenya and an event filled Fall 2009, I hope and pray that you will find the kind of relationships I have found at the Tapestry.

The Difference Your Life Can Make
Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins. (James 5:19-20)
One of the Christian’s greatest deterrents from sin is the life of another Christian. Some Christians maintain that it is none of their business if another chooses to sin. They are convinced that they are being judgmental if they respond to someone in sin. The world persuades them not to get involved, but this inaction prevents them from being an effective intercessor.
As Christians we are aware that sin brings death_(Rom. 6:23). Sin kills relationships, dismantles marriages, stifles joy, and destroys peace. When we see someone wander from the truth into error, how should we respond? When Jesus saw sin it broke His heart. He wept over entire cities as He saw them rejecting the truth (Matt. 23:37–39). He prayed fervently for His disciples to be strong when they were tempted (John 17). He warned those who were heading toward spiritual failure (Matt. 26:20–25, 34). Jesus was even willing to die to save people from their sins because He knew the devastation that sin causes. Jesus never stood idle as those around Him were led astray by their sin. He always took an active role in turning them back to God.
“Minding your own business” will save you some discomfort, but it will not help a brother or sister who needs to return to the Lord. If you are truly aware of the grave consequences for those who continue in sin, you will be moved to weep even as Jesus wept. Pray fervently for your friend. That will safeguard your motives and prepare you to minister to him. Be alert, in the event that God asks you to confront your friend. If you do so, be loving and gentle lest you, too, be tempted (Gal. 6:1).

This Sunday there is so much fun going on that you ARE NOT GOING TO want to miss it!!!!!

Sunday Morning, Pastor Jyak will be sharing with us and directly afterward, we have a Water Bottle Outreach that is going to knock your socks off and/or our cookout!!!!

Whether you take part in the outreach or not, you HAVE TO COME to the Hedrick household for the second installment of the Tapestry's fourth annual cookout series!!!!!!

If you want to sign up to bring a side dish, you are welcome. Anything from cole slaw to potato salad, chips and desserts will be a grand additions.

We are going to have our evening service outside, which has been SO FUN. And Seiji & Joan will oversee our time. Guys, no matter what you do this summer, be sure to catch one of our cookouts.

Now the LORD had said to Abram: "Get out of your country, From your family And from your father's house, To a land that I will show you." (Genesis 12:1)
The most dramatic changes in your life will come from God’s initiative, not yours. The people God used mightily in Scripture were all ordinary people to whom He gave divine assignments that they never could have initiated. The Lord often took them by surprise for they were not seeking significant mandates from God. Even so, He saw their hearts, and He knew they were trustworthy.
The Lord spoke to Abram when He was beginning to build a nation dedicated to His purposes. Through this nation would come the Savior. God appeared to Moses at the very time He had purposed to deliver Israel out of slavery in Egypt. God found in Jesse’s youngest son David a godly man who could lead His people. God surprised Mary when He told her she would be the mother of the Messiah. God’s Son selected the twelve disciples, all ordinary, uneducated men, when He was ready to take the good news of His salvation to the world. Through the ages God has taken the initiative in the everyday lives of people to accomplish things through them that they never could have imagined.
The Lord may be initiating some new things in your life. When He tells you what His plans are, trust Him and walk closely with Him. Don’t let the busyness of your present activity keep you from experiencing all that God has in store for you. You will see Him accomplish things through your life that you never dreamed were possible (Eph. 3:20).

HAPPY 5TH ANNIVERSARY TAPESTRY!

Can you believe it guys? It has been 5 whole years since the Tapestry had its first service on June 6, 2004! GOD has been so gracious to us and we have thoroughly enjoyed being at least one of the churches that you have chosen to worship in the last 5 years.

We want to cordially invite you to be a part of our 5 year celebration. It's nothing major, but that Tapestry is heading into a new season with this 5th year. We are having an overhaul of our look, (new worship banners, setup and style coming later in June), our website, our ministries and even our evening service style. We are focusing on developing a culture of discipleship this year and this summer we are getting ready to start our Cookout Series! So, this week we invite you to come celebrate with us as we introduce these upgrades and changes over the next month.

We will have breakfast goodies in the morning before (10:30ish AM) and during the 11AM service and will have our annual balloon launch directly after the service. We will have people taking pictures for our directory and our photo albums, so come with a smiling, cheerful face. AND, expect to have fun during the service as we remember where we have been and look forward to where Poppa is calling us to go!

Again, thank you for letting us serve you these 5 years and we hope that we will be better able to serve you in the next!

The reason I am sharing it is because we all have an amazing opportunity right now to make a decision. Do we want to be satisified simply knowing about GOD and HIS ways or do you want more? Are you one of those few out there that are not content simply watching the Red Sea part…

God’s Ways
He made known His ways to Moses, His acts to the children of Israel. (Psalms 103:7)
Are you satisfied with merely knowing the acts of God, or do you also want to know His ways? There is a difference. This difference is illustrated in the lives of the children of Israel as compared to Moses. The Israelites witnessed the miracles God performed; they walked across the dry Red Sea just as Moses did. They ate the manna and quail from heaven even as Moses did. They were content to receive God’s provision without ever knowing God Himself. Yet Moses saw beyond the provision of God to the person of God. Others, such as the Egyptian magicians, might perform miraculous acts, but no one else did things the way God did (Exod. 7:11–12). The way God acted provided a window into His nature. If Moses had been content with only God’s power, he could have accepted the presence of an angel and been victorious in his efforts (Exod. 33:15). But Moses wanted to experience more. He wanted to experience God Himself, not just God’s activity.
Some today, like the Israelites, are content to experience God’s activity without ever coming to know God. They are the recipients of answered prayer, yet they never come to know the Provider. They are blessed by God’s providential care over their families, their homes, and their jobs, yet they are satisfied not knowing the One from whom the blessings come. They benefit from God’s protection, yet they never become acquainted with the Protector.
Have you come to know God more personally as a result of your experiences with Him? As you observe the acts of God, look beyond them to the revelation of His character (Gen. 22:14; John 6:35).

That You May Marvel
"The Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner. For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel." (John 5:19-20)
Jesus, realizing that His role was that of a servant, never sought to initiate activity for the Father (Matt. 20:28). The servant never sets the agenda—the master does. The servant must be so alert to what the master is doing that whenever the master begins to move in a direction the servant quickly joins him. Even the Son of God did not assume He knew the best thing to do in a situation. Instead, He looked to see the Father’s activity and then joined Him. Jesus knew His Father so well that He was keenly sensitive to divine activity around Him, immediately recognizing His Father at work.
It is possible for us to be so busy trying to bring God into our activity that we don’t even notice Him at work around us. He seeks to redirect our attention so that we might join Him, but we tend to be self-centered, evaluating everything by how it affects us. We must learn to view events around us from God’s perspective. Then we will see our world very differently. When God brings someone across our path, we will look to see if God is convicting that person of his need for salvation. Perhaps God is comforting someone in her sorrow. God might be encouraging your friend as she faces a challenge. We will then adjust our lives to join God as He works in that person’s life. We ought to live each day with tremendous anticipation as we look to see where God is working around us. As our eyes are opened to His activity, we will marvel at His great works.

CYPRUS | An Update from Tony | 2009-4-27

Dear Friends and Family,

First let me excuse myself for sending out another email in such a short amount of time. It has become crunch time here at Gateways so I am having to take care of all my affairs as the end of the school is approaching. As I have mentioned in previous update letters, I am going to Ethiopia for my school's month long outreach trip. I will be leaving in just over three weeks from now. While I am there I will be working at orphanages and feeding centers, ministering in prisons, working with various churches, and doing a lot of street evangelism. My hope is to be used by God to impact that nation and see a fiery generation run after the heart of God.

In order for me to go on this trip I have to be able to raise $1950 by April 30th. To date I already have $1435 which leaves me a mere $515 short. I am asking for your support to help me raise my final amount within the next three days. Please pray about supporting me and see if God is leading you to help me reach this goal. Living Water
For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, And hewn themselves cisterns--broken cisterns that can hold no water. (Jeremiah 2:13)
There should never be “dry spells” in the Christian life. God said that He would be like an artesian well in the life of a believer. Artesian wells bubbled forth with a cold, fresh, never-ending supply of water from the depths of the earth, quenching any thirst and always satisfying. This is the picture of the spiritual refreshment that belongs to the person in whom the Holy Spirit resides.
Have you ever heard people say they are experiencing a dry spell in their Christian life? What are they saying? Are they saying that the Lord ran out of water? It should never cross your mind that the fountain of living waters residing within you should ever be reduced to a trickle. You don’t need to run all over the country trying to find sources of spiritual refreshment. Conferences, retreats, and books can all bring encouragement, but if you are a Christian, the source of living water already resides within you.
Have you exchanged the living fountain for man-made cisterns that cannot hold water? Why would you exchange an artesian well for a broken water tank? Artesian wells do not dry up. Broken cisterns do. If you are experiencing spiritual dryness right now, is it because you have been attempting to find your source of spiritual refreshment from man-made sources, which will fail you every time? Jesus extended an invitation to you when He said: “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink” (John 7:37). Have you been refreshed by the living water only Jesus can provide?

I wanted to clarify and share with you more about the clean out project we are taking on the in a few weeks. I apologize if I have not been able to communicate the need or the purpose of this effort. I work with affordable housing projects and this one building has been one of the most challenging projects I have encountered. The property has 30 units, 23 are occupied with low income households and without assistance is on an eminent course towards foreclosure. Here is the background.
The property is located in a small enclave of dense populated apartments in NW DC. Historically, housing stock in the area has been substandard. It's cheap and available to those who cannot find subsided housing, mostly the working poor. During the housing boom earlier this decade the surrounding neighborhood fell prey to development pressures, landlords using illegal tactics to displace families so they could renovate and convert to high end condos. Some of the tactics used include stopping services (trash, heat, repairs). This caused a great distrust and suspicion among the people in the area and outsiders, a problem that still exists today. During the height of the housing boom (2005) the landlord put this property up for sale and the tenants together seized the opportunity to purchase so to determine the fate of their home. Working with a non profit developer they put a plan together that included purchasing, renovating and keeping the costs affordable to all who lived there. The tenants , collectively  would homeowners so to be able to determine their own housing circumstance . Long story short they did buy the property but then funding (low cost loans) required renovating the building fell through (that is another story for another time) and the residents are left with a delipated property and non-profit developer who walked away.
The residents here have overcome many obstacles, not just with the building itself but with problem residents, court battles, and security issues. A handful of residents who understand the issues and the impact it has on their families and neighbors have stuck with me as we seek out long term viable solutions. Many non-profit groups I have solicited for support initially were interested have backed out.
Peter, Fidilis, G-Sue, Lori, Daeho, Melisa, Dustin, Lisa and I (the Foundation) and have agreed that this project is worth standing by and we are asking for your help. The Association was able to secure limited funding to renovate many of the inhabitable vacant units. Once these units are renovated, they can be offered to the other low income families and their monthly charges can assist with the mortgage of the building. In order for the units to be renovated they must be cleaned out (the funding received cannot be used to clean out the property). We have committed to cleaning out one of the units on Saturday, April 25 at 10 am. Basically we will be moving out broken appliances, mattress and stuffing trash into bags. The job is a very dirty one, as we might encounter critters (bed bugs, fleas, and ??). I do not want to mislead anyone into thinking that this will be an easy project. Besides the dirty work you can come to support the residents efforts and provide encouragement.
Another way you can assist is donating funds for the cost associated with moving the trash. We have priced out costs and we need about $300 . We already have a commitment of $100. Any amount of funds available would be greatly appreciated. Pat and Daeho are setting up a paypal account if you want to contribute online, we can also take donations on Sunday.
Let me know if you have questions or would like additional details. I am privileged to share this part of my life with you and would love to see you be a part of the effort of these residents to secure safe, affordable and decent housing.
Also for those of you who have already planned on coming, we are looking for people to pick up the uhaul and drive them. We will also try to carpool on to the event. Email me back and i will put you on the details and logistics email.

Hello and Good Morning or Might I say, “Jambo Sana…”
It is great to be back from Kenya and to have this moment to thank everyone for their prayers, oversight and hard work in my absence. Many have been asking how the trip went through email, phone and/or text and because I have not had time to go through all of the literal hundreds of emails yet, I thought I would send this short message today and plan to do a Kenya review next Sunday just after Easter to fill everyone in and report in a timely fashion on just all that has happened.
In fact, I am back and have been not only thoroughly blessed by quite possibly one of the most amazing peoples I have ever met, but taught through their loves, care and reception that there is so much more to the Kingdom of GOD and we have only begun to scratch the surface.
Today, friends and family, I can tell you that I have been changed, affected and empowered myself as GOD has revealed my further place in HIS work. As this was revealed through the time there, I further realized just how much Poppa has for each of you. I apologize for not realizing this earlier. We have the chance to be used by Poppa to change not only the world, but to allow GOD to change us as well! I hope you will continue to walk with me in whatever capacity you currently do and more as we continue to take this journey. I can literally SEE the opportunities around us both abroad and here in DC and the USA and am alive with excitement.
I am different today. I seem to be different every day as I wake up. As Poppa has allowed me to both feel and see HIS love for me over the last couple of weeks, I have found that I love you all even more and cannot wait to see and speak with each of you.
Here are just a few things for reminders.
1 – This weekend is Easter – We will have an Easter Service in the morning.
2 – Right after the service we will go out and lead OEG (Operation Easter Egg)! Many of you helped with the preparation and I have already heard about the casseroles, which I heard that I really missed a treat with Lori’s mom’s casserole!
3 – Good Friday, in the evening, we will have a special service with Twinbrook Community Church. Please come take part. Here is their info: http://www.twinbrookministries.org/ it will be Friday April 10th, at 7pm.
4 – Next Sunday, April 19, (Zuzana’s Easter… HAHAHA!) We will have the Story of Kenya through picture, video and gifts.
Please don’t miss anything. I know you will be sad if you do. I look forward to seeing your smiling faces. They do my heart good.

Hi Everyone,
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. I can tell you that I DID! After getting my round of shots for the upcoming Kenya Trip and of course the crazy accident last week, I am an achy guy! The reason for this latest email is we have found ourselves in a slight predicament.
We have TONS OF EGGS for Operation Easter Egg, BUT NOT ENOUGH CANDY!!!!!
We plan to fill over a thousand eggs with candy and have bags as well. We have publicized the event in the area and will be stuffing bags and eggs in two weeks on April 5^th after the evening service during our Casserole Cookoff. We have casserole makers signed up and anyone can just bring a pot or dish of their favorite food to share as we do the stuffing, but unless we get some MAJOR HONKING CANDY….
…well, there will be no stuffing! HAHAHA!
So, here’s the deal… Let’s show these kids that the Tapestry Church is the CANDY CAPITAL of churches! Can you please do your magic guys? Let’s get more than enough candy! we need Candy! tons and tons of Candy!its not happening. We cant do this if there is no Candy!
So, what do ya’ say guys?

Ever Had One of Those Days? | A Special Thread Report

Pray for me. I am a bit sore. It was either take on a transfer truck or a car head on. I chose the truck. The good news is that the transfer was not hurt nor the driver. The bad news is that it is my fault. Of course, it would have been the other driver’s fault, had I hit the car coming head on at me.
I had vehicles encroaching from both sides. The transfer was in my lane on one side and another car from head on.
So, with that said, I both hit the truck and have the blame. One of those days!
Please keep me in prayer. I know this is only a momentary distraction, but this is my first official accident. This of course is just a couple of weeks out from my travel to Kenya. And I am REALLY pretty sore now. I have taken advil, but to no avail.
Thanks for all of your thoughts, prayers and encouragement and thought this does hurt my heart a little, on the brighter side, it does afford the following:
1 – Plenty of time for Lori and I to pray together as we drive to work together for the next couple weeks.
2 – A new way to reduce carbon emissions since I will not be driving for a couple of days since this scared the crud out of me.
3 – A chance to reevaluate and possibly get a better van that will allow us to pick people up at the metro. (Something we’ve been wanting for a while).
4 – A reprieve from my incessant schedule and a chance to rethink how busy and overworked I am.
5 – A moment to see all of my friends and family come to my rescue.
6 – Another chance to realize that my first reaction is still as it has been in the past, selfless. I didn’t think twice about hitting someone head on, instead, I took a stopped truck.
My praises are:
1 – I am ok and that I did not hit a driver head on which would have either killed me or someone else.
2 – You guys have been praying, texting and chatting and literally encouraging the heck out of me.
3 – It wasn’t anyone else. I am so glad it was me driving it.
4 – Kenya called and all the pastors were having a prayer vigil for me and told me that they have been doing it ALL DAY, which means that they are probably the reason I didn’t have a head on collision and die. THOSE GUYS WERE INTERCEDING and GOD probably saved me from a worse accident and a worse plan!
5 – These near misses and close calls happen to me a few times a week for the last 4.5 years and this is the ONLY TIME I HAVE ever been in an accident! NOW THAT IS A PRAISE! That is over 450 near misses and only one accident. NOW THINK ABOUT THAT!
6 – We already have possibilities for a new van or other plans.
7 – WE HAVE A TEAM ON MISSION IN MEXICO today!
8 – I WILL BE IN KENYA IN TWO WEEKS PREACHING THE GOSPEL TO HUNGRY SOULS!
9 – Jesus is moving in our church!
10 – We have grown so much this year!
11 – My family is safe and healthy!
12 – GOD IS KING!
13 – And that JESUS IS MY LOVE, MY LORD, AND MY SAVIOR! THE BEST PRAISE EVER!
So, with that said, how can I EVER COMPLAIN!

Hey Everyone,
I wanted to send out this Thread to remind us of a few things and to encourage!
1 – Please keep our team that is going to Mexico in your prayers. They leave tomorrow and will be taking resources and finances to our contact in Mexico. It is really exciting to hear about Pastor Eden’s (sp?) vision, heart and plans. He has already planted churches, is now starting a possible community center and an orphanage. What a great VISION. So, Patrick and Hector, our prayers go with us as you fly out on Thursday to go and encourage and SPREAD FI-YAH!
2 – I will be leaving on March 31 for my work in Kenya. I go to Pastor Onesimus and his church plants outside Nairobi. I will be leading a large conference and crusade and will be likely preaching the gospel to hundreds if not thousands. While I am there, I am making plans to connect with leaders that will give us relationships for future work with the Foundation we are starting this year.
3 – We have been working to start an at home day care for the church in our house. This is something we have been praying about and planning for over two years. We have people that will be taking training and Lori and I have a few more steps to take to prepare the house for the actual inspection. We plan to provide services at a reduced rate to people in need and a sliding scale to single mothers. We see that this will likely be something that will grow with the church and a business like this has the possibility to fund ministry and mission, employ workers in need of jobs and help us get a building.
4 – We are planning to upgrade our sound system. It’s nothing extravagant, but after 11 years of use, the present one is breaking down. (I bought the present one in 1997 when I started the outreach ministry “Sparkplug Ministries”). So, we will be carefully purchasing something that allows us to: be heard throughout the building clearly, have monitors for the musicians, will be easy to setup and tear down, can be used at any future building and will be GREAT for recording. (Which by the way, if you weren’t there Sunday night, YOU MISSED THE BEST worship jam EVER! I will later post the recording that Zuzana made on her cell phone so everyone can hear it. AMAZING!) And this of course will later lead to us recording our music as we have planned.
5 – We have a number of events coming up:

With that said, I leave you with this encouraging thought from my favorite spiritual leader, Henry Blackaby:
God’s Provision Brings Glory
Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me. (Psalms 50:15)
Did you know that you bring glory to God by calling upon Him when you are in distress? God promised He would deliver you if you turned to Him. You deny the Lord honor that is rightfully His every time you find yourself in difficulty and you fail to call upon Him for help! There may be times when God allows you to reach a point of need so that you can call upon Him, and thus let Him demonstrate to a watching world the difference He makes in the lives of His children. If God never allowed you to experience need, people around you might never have the opportunity to witness God’s provision in the life of a Christian. If you never faced a shortfall, you might be tempted to feel self-sufficient and without any need of God in your daily life.
Pride will tempt you to think that you do not need to seek God’s assistance. Self-regard will seek to convince you that you can handle your dilemma through your own wisdom, resources, and hard work. Pride will also rob glory from God and seek to give it to you. Don’t allow your pride to take what rightfully belongs to the Lord. Call upon your Lord and wait exclusively upon Him to rescue you. Then give Him the glory that He deserves.
Self-sufficiency can greatly hinder your ability to experience God and bring Him honor. The next time you are in distress, turn to Him!

Comfort from the Shepherd

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. (Psalms 23:4)
As a child of God you are never alone! Your Shepherd is with you at all times. You never have to call Him in to your situation. You never have to wonder where He is. You never have to fear that if things become too difficult, He will abandon you. He goes before you; He walks beside you; He comes behind you. He protects you securely. Just as He sees every sparrow and knows every hair that is on your head, so His gaze is constantly upon you (Luke 12:6–7). Even when you cannot see Him, He always keeps His eyes upon you. He comforts you with His strong presence in times of sorrow and grief. He leads you through the valley of the shadow of death. He does not necessarily lead you around the valley as you might wish. There are times when your Shepherd knows that the only way to get you where He wants to take you is to lead you down the path that passes through the dark valley. Yet, at those times He walks closely with you, reassuring you throughout the journey that He still loves you and is with you. It is during those times that you experience His love and compassion in a deeper dimension than you ever have before.
You never need to fear evil. As intimidating as evil can be, there is nothing you will ever face that intimidates your Shepherd. He has seen it all and soundly defeated every form of wickedness. Evil never catches Him by surprise. Your Shepherd is always prepared and knows exactly when and where you will experience difficulty. Place your absolute trust in your Good Shepherd that He will protect you and demonstrate His love for you through the darkest valley.

CORRECTION: Operation Easter Egg 2009

After having many people tell me how much fun they had in the Fall doing the Tapestry’s “Operation Easter Egg,” we have decided to do ANOTHER OPERATION event that is purely for the kids of our community!!!!!
Operation Easter Egg will be ramping up this weekend and will have a couple more dates before the BIG DAY, APRIL 11!
So, here’s what’s going on and just how you can get involved.
THIS WEEKEND – Saturday, March 14, 2009 at 9am
WE ARE DOING A REALLY COOL smoke alarm battery giveaway in the neighborhood around the park where we will be doing Operation Easter Egg. Each bag that we place on the doors of the houses nearby will have invitations to OEG! So, we need you to come at 9AM to PD & Lori’s at: 4100 Delancy Dr, Silver Spring, MD 20906

Observing Lent | 2009-2-25

Hi Everyone,
Good Morning this happy Ash Wednesday, the beginning of our Lenten season. Below, I have attached a post from the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association website on Lent. As you read it, I encourage you to take up your own Lenten journey. Choose something today that you can fast from for the next 40 days. Now, I am not asking you to give up food and water, hahahha. That would be pretty dumb. However, choose something this day and from this day until Resurrection (Easter) Sunday, join with me in a journey of self exploration and walking with Christ to the Cross.
What will you leave behind in efforts to grow this season? I am giving up complaining. So, if you hear me complain for the next 40 days, then you have the right to say, “PD, I thought you were giving up complaining for Lent…” I will take it in stride and make the change. Every time we find ourselves in contrast to our goal, we should take time to think on Jesus and the cross, talking with HIM for a moment, creating sacred space in the midst of the mundane.
This is an exciting season. So, read the article below and take the challenge with me.

Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the Lenten season, a journey which leads to Easter Sunday.

"It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners." These words from Mark 2:17 demonstrate for us again the genius of Jesus and serve as an introduction to Ash Wednesday, a somewhat mysterious date on the Christian calendar which marks the beginning of Lent. It evokes the past, encourages us to focus on the present, and points us toward an inspiring future.

In some parts of the country you could go about your business all day and never encounter a reminder that this is Ash Wednesday. Or you could look up from your work to find someone near you wearing ashes on her forehead in a mark that looks something like a cross.

Ash Wednesday is about preparation, and the beginning of preparation at that. All of the Lenten season is focused upon preparation for Easter. Ash Wednesday is about how we can begin those preparations. It is "to make a right beginning of repentance," as the Book of Common Prayer puts it. We are reminded of "the need which all Christians continually have to renew their repentance and faith."

Ash Wednesday is the day when the journey toward Easter begins. I would like to suggest that Ash Wednesday helps us begin our preparation for Easter in three ways: by teaching us to mourn the past, to examine the present, and to look forward toward an inspiring future.

Mourning the past
The ashes of Ash Wednesday come from the palm leaves that were burned after last year’s Palm Sunday. Throughout the Scripture ashes speak of mourning and regret. To mark his sadness, Job covered himself in ashes. Jesus reminds us that repentance (true regret) can include sackcloth and ashes. The ashes from last year’s palms remind us that although we may have received Christ enthusiastically at the beginning of our Christian walk we have perhaps lost our first love.

What better call to return to our first love than to be marked with the ashes of our past enthusiasm? These ashes also remind us that the original celebration of Palm Sunday gave way to the crucifixion less than a week later. Psalm 51 is an excellent reading for Ash Wednesday. It is a Scriptural guide to repentance.

Examining our present
When Jesus challenged His listeners to consider the truth that those who are healthy do not need a doctor, He was asking each one of them to examine themselves. Only those who agree they are sick will submit to a doctor, and only when we acknowledge our sin can we receive His forgiveness. Ash Wednesday is an opportunity to examine our need afresh and to affirm that we will always need a Savior.

Do we agree with Jesus that we are still in need, or having received Him as Lord and Savior at one point in time, have we forgotten that our need is daily? Colossians 2:6 reminds us "Just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in Him." Or as one pastor said, "The way in is the way on."
Looking to the future
As Ash Wednesday begins our voyage through Lent we are also aware that our final destination is Easter Sunday. And Easter Sunday is more than a commemoration of the past. It is also about hope for the future. We have all seen what commemoration looks like when it has lost its spirit. Some people celebrate Holy days (holidays) without ever encountering the meaning: Thanksgiving Day without the giving of thanks, Christmas day without a living Savior, and Easter Sunday without a risen Lord.

But the glorious message of Easter is that He is risen! We can prepare for Easter by reflecting on the promise of resurrection. I Corinthians 15: 20 reveals, "Christ has indeed risen from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep." This wonderful verse assures us not only of Christ’s resurrection but also our ultimate destiny: that we too will be resurrected, and our loved ones in Christ. His resurrection is the promise of ours, complete with an eternal future of joy.

There are riches waiting in Ash Wednesday, especially for many of us who are unaccustomed to a formal church calendar. No matter how we mark the day, whether with ashes on our forehead or with reflection on the meaning of Easter, Jesus invites us journey on to Easter Sunday with Him.

Thought of the Week 2009-2-20
Knowledge has to be improved, challenged, and increased constantly, or it vanishes.

As I prepared for work today, I had a couple of thoughts that really encouraged me. First, I started thinking about my learning process and the fact that one of my life-values is learning. I plan to personally be a life long learner. So, no matter what stage I am at, I plan to always be a student of some sort. Over the past few years, I have found myself a student of:
1 – the cultures in our area; as I learned to reach further and know more people in my community and world.
2 – the current world socio-economic climate; as I traveled to a few new places.
3 – our government; as I spent time serving some of our leaders.
4 – my daughter; as she taught me more about being a Poppy.
5 – my church; as they taught me about community and caring. (Which, on a side note also taught me not to look at people as either liabilities or opportunities. I now see them as “friends and family!” And I attempt to NOT see people as objects or something I can “win” or “use.” …Enough with the manipulation and consumerism already. We have let it come into our relationships… Sorry, that’s another thought… I will take that one up another day… LOL).
This year, I plan to be a student of:
1 – finance; as I return to my studies.
2 – language; as I plan to relearn a couple of my languages I used to know.
3 – art; as I reawaken the creative person inside.
I encourage all of us to think through what our opportunities for learning are this year. I also challenge us to always be in a growth position. Remember, only dead things are not growing! I personally am in a state of LIVING; therefore, I am always in a state of growth and change! So, CHANGE AND GROWTH ARE GOOD; even when the growth includes a bit of pruning and pruning ALWAYS gives the stronger branches more room for GROWTH and FRUIT!
This current era and economy are not only causing a cleansing and a correction to the world we live in; bringing us back to a sustainable state of living, but it is also affording us opportunities for growth. The change that is taking place across the globe can either be seen as horribly awful or as a well needed shift to our paradigms and the catalyst we have needed in our societies for change! I encourage us to at this moment; to begin to recognize and realize the opportunities in our lives for future growth, to step through open doors, to embrace change creatively, to see the best opportunities around us and to LIVE!

The last thing I wanted to write that I thought this morning on the way in to work was that one GREAT thing that I think is right in front of our faces as an organization is that should we weather this storm… Should we stand through the gales and the rains, being beaten down, ever changed by the affects of loss, grief, and pain and stay the course? Should we make it through the night; when the day dawns, I believe that we will be in a place much different from now.
We will be the ones left standing.
We will be the ones with integrity.
We will be able to look back at this year and say, “Do you remember 2008-2009? Now, that was a tough year!”
And when we speak to others about staying the course and being committed to a plan, our words will ring true. Those that come after us will hear the words we say with authority because we did not falter!
This morning, I am writing this email as an encouragement, as a pep-me-up. Guys, no matter your situation, no matter your trial, no matter the storm, stay the course. Learn from your experiences. Stand firm.
At the end of the storm, those left standing will not have a problem being seen since the crowd that used to hide them will be gone. Get ready for your future. If we can just stay the course, the future affords us the honor of saying we survived!
Today, YOU are a SURVIVOR! Today, YOU are living in the light of tomorrow!
